Fertility Management For Pecan Based On Leaf Analysis Standards

Researcher: Michael Smith, Regents Professor Emeritus

This project focused on:

  • Nitrogen (N) management strategies

    • Improved recommended application times and methods based on N conservation and movement in the tree, utilization of stored N and uptake of applied N

    • Use of selected legume ground covers to supply N and harbor beneficial arthropods to suppress pecan aphid populations

  • Improvement in uptake of phosphorus and potassium with band applications

  • Evaluation of several materials for foliar zinc application

  • Identified manganese (Mn) deficiency in pecan and established a method to correct the shortage with foliar applications. Shortages of Mn are primarily on alkaline soils in the Red River Basin.
